Mission

Imp Press is a micro publisher from Toronto, Canada that specializes in books that straddle literary- and genre-fiction. We have a particular interest in lives and events that unfold in the city of Toronto.

Our mission, before anything else, is to publish good stories: stories that are well-conceived and well-executed.

We believe that what the story is about is inextricably bound with how the story is told, and in that sense we are interested in both narrative form and in the elements that make up the story’s content. (The way we learn that a man named Gregor woke up one morning transformed into a monstrous bug is, we always say, just as important as the fact that Gregor has, indeed, woken up one morning, transformed, after a bout of troubled dreams, into a monstrous bug!)

Secondly, our mission is to make you (a bit of) a snob. (But we do hope that you will not, then, alienate your friends and family.) The current literary field in Canada is, if you will allow us to generalize only a bit, a bit too conservative: far too focused on the trappings of plot and character. It is our dream to play a part in changing that — but not too much! We want you to read slowly. To chew words the way you would a fine piece of jerky.

Finally, our mission is to help write the city we live in. Stories, we believe, both reveal and create. They help us recover and maintain our pasts, but they also construct and invent different — dare we hope, better? — ways of living with each other.

Cheers!
